BOTOX® Cosmetic is an injectable treatment used for the rejuvenation of the skin. It is a naturally-purified protein that relaxes the muscles of facial expression giving you a smooth, relaxed, and youthful look. The procedure is quick, very well-tolerated, and results typically last for 3-4 months.
BOTOX® is not a filler, but is often used in conjunction with fillers to reshape the face. BOTOX® relaxes, and fillers fill. This is an important difference.
BOTOX® is a neuromodulator, meaning that it blocks the attachment of the neurotransmitting chemicals that are released by nerves at the neuromuscular junction to make a muscle move. As a result, the impulse from the nerve to the muscle is blocked. The clinical result is a decrease in the movement of the muscle and that causes a decrease in the wrinkling of the skin overlying that muscle.
BOTOX® is FDA-approved for treatment of frown (glabellar) lines between the brows. It can be used to achieve a non-surgical brow lift when certain muscles are injected. BOTOX® can improve jaw line definition when injected into a neck muscle called the platysma. It can also be safely used to decrease excessive sweating of the hands or under the arms from medical conditions such as hyperhidrosis, or cosmetically for special situations like weddings.
BOTOX® is commonly used in a wide age range of patients aged from 18-65. Patients over 65 can use BOTOX®, but loose skin overlying the muscles makes the improvement less dramatic. Effects usually last 4 months, but overtime, a cumulative benefit can be seen in younger patients.
While the injection itself takes place, you may feel a slight stinging sensation at the injection site. After treatment, it is normal for some slight bumps to appear.
